Back to the Future Day - 21st October 2015

It is finally “Back to the Future Day” on 21st October – the day Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel forward to in “Back to the Future II”. So what predictions made by the film have come true?

  • Flying cars – For the most part, no. While some prototype flying cars exist (like this one), flying cars are far from common, and we certainly don’t have sky roads.
  • Holograms – In the film, Marty is ‘attacked’ by a Jaws hologram. In the real world, holograms are being worked on, but they are not in common use.
  • Self-drying clothes – Sadly, no one has broken into the market of self-drying clothing. Maybe in another 30 years…
  • Size adjusting clothes – It is simply not necessary to invest in adjusting clothes, so we’re still buying clothes that actually fit us. How boring!
  • Auto-lacing shoes – Yes! Like these ones. But sadly these shoes are not used in the mainstream.
  • Cars that run on waste products – Yes! But they are not very effective or reliable, so we’re still using fossil fuels for the most part.
  • Hoverboard – Yes! This one, which has caused some controversy as it is not pavement-legal, and this one, which actually hovers!
  • Fingerprint entry – Yes, but more for unlocking our phones, not for getting in our front doors. Most of us are still using keys for that.
  • Watching multiple screens at once – Yes! Marty McFly Jr. is seen watching several different TV channels simultaneously in the film. In reality, most of us use our tablets of phones while watching TV (known as dual-screening), which is very similar!
  • Faster food – Yes, fast food has come along in recent years, with improved microwaveable food as well as sites like Just Eat that provide takeaway delivery. Though it’s not quite ‘hydrating a pizza’.
  • Bionic implants – In the film, Griff has bionic implants to make him stronger. We have done this in a way, but not for the general able-bodied, healthy population. Instead, we have 3D printed limbs and organs.
  • Inside out trousers and two ties – Fortunately, these 2015 fashion statements from the film have not become a reality.
  • Virtual reality headsets – We’re getting there! The Oculus Rift is due for release in the next year or so, bringing in a new era of virtual reality.
