The Rise & Fall of Apps

Who would have thought that after its launch and its unexpected popularity, that the useless YO app actually managed to maintain its high position and has received $1.5 million in funding! Not only that but there have also been copy-cat apps; some serious, some not. The AHOY app is said to be mocking the YO app, however, the HEY app is for “when YO isn’t enough” and is not meant to be a joke…

Another app which had a lot of attention was the Snapchat competitor, Slingshot, created by Facebook. Although it managed to get between 100,000 and 500,000 downloads, we can pretty much base that on the fact that users would have solely downloaded it due to its creator’s already high profile. Consumers would automatically assume this app is as good as Facebook. Therefore, it already had an advantage as new apps on the market would not have this privilege. However, it has lost its buzz and has now fallen out of the 1,000 free apps. Slingshot flopped. [Source: Mashable]

There has been a recent new addition to the app market which has been based on the ever popular dating app, Tinder. This new shopping app, Kwoller, allows you to ‘swipe’ right to buy an item or left if you don’t like it. The question is, will it be as popular as Tinder is just because of the usability or is Tinder popular for different reasons?
