Social Media & the World Cup 2014: Figures & Winners
We all fall to social media when it comes to expressing our opinions and wanting to be in the know of what’s happening. This can be especially seen when events like the Super Bowl, Olympics and World Cup are on.
The Super Bowl 2014 and Sochi Olympics gained huge social involvement, yet it is now said that this World Cup 2014 has gained more than both combined! With 2 billion interactions from 350 million users coming from Facebook throughout the World Cup, and 672 million tweets about the World Cup throughout the tournament, the World Cup is definitely the most social event of all time.
It’s no surprise to see that the Brazil vs. Germany match was one of the most talked about sporting events; seeing Brazil’s humiliating defeat of 1-7, with 4 goals scored in 5 minutes! There were a reported 35.6 million tweets and 200 million interactions from 66 million users! This match broke the Tweets Per Minute record when the fifth goal was scored with 580,166 TPM. That’s a whole load of interaction! However, this became the second most talked about sporting event after the World Cup final, where users set another new TPM record with 618,725 tweets per minute! The final also gathered about 280 million Facebook interactions from 88 million users. To give you a comparison of just how big this World Cup was, the Winter Sochi Olympics only generated 120 million interactions from just 45 million users. [Source: Mashable]
Being supporters of England, let’s throw in a fun fact about their social performance this World Cup. Even despite their poor performance, they are still second to Brazil when it comes to social mentions, with over 10 million interactions. [Source: CNN].

So who do you think got the most engagement between Facebook and Twitter? From the stats above, it does seem like Facebook is the clear winner. “After all, there were more people talking about the World Cup on Facebook than there are monthly active users on Twitter” [Source: Mashable]. But in comparative terms, both the social networks won in their own way; they both gained a massive boost in activity from users and brands and neither suffered a major outage or bad press subsequently. Well done you guys!
Even though the World Cup has now finished, brands have still been making the most of Germany winning. With an example below and more to see via Mashable
It’s safe to say that there will never be a dull day on social media, especially when it comes to big events. And brands will always make the most of recent events via social media, no matter what the occasion.
