William Shu is the co-founder and CEO of food delivery service Deliveroo. He founded the company in London in 2013 with computer programmer Greg Orlowski, and it now operates in 84 cities across 12 countries.

Prior to founding Deliveroo, Shu gained a BA from Northwestern University, and an MBA from Wharton. He also worked as an investment banker for Morgan Stanley before starting his own company.

Shu’s business partner Greg Orlowski resigned in 2016, and has an estimated £46 million stake in the business. Shu now runs the business independently.

Deliveroo operates a fleet of delivery people and partners with local restaurants. It works by providing a delivery service, marketing and taking orders, so that restaurants that do not usually deliver food can offer a delivery service. It charges restaurants 25% of the food’s value as commission for the service, and charges the customer £2.50 per order. It delivers food from local restaurants in 30 minutes or less.

For the first 10 months, Shu delivered food himself. He was the company’s first driver, and continued to deliver food on weekends long into the success of the business. The company’s delivery people travel by bicycle or motorcycle, and are frequently students or part-time workers.

The company uses sophisticated algorithms to ensure customers and restaurants have real-time information on the location of their driver.

Deliveroo is backed by Accel Partners and Index Ventures. It operates in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Australia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.
