Tech Heroes – Sergey Brin

Sergey Brin founded Google with co-founder Larry Page in 1996. Brin is now the 13th richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $46 billion.

Brin met co-founder Larry Page while the two were at Stanford University, having moved to the US from the Soviet Union when he was 6. They developed the PageRank algorithm and found that it could make a search engine that would be superior to others by sorting pages more accurately. The PageRank algorithm analysed relevance of backlinks that connect web pages to judge the value of a site. Google was initially made available to internet users in 1996 when it was still on Stanford’s website.

Aside from the gigantically successful Google (and all other businesses under its parent company of Alphabet, which Brin is President of), Brin has many other interests. He’s an investor in Tesla Motors, and he and Page are using Google’s philanthropic arm (Google.org) to try and solve energy and climate issues by developing renewable energy.

Brin is an investor in Space Adventures, a space tourism company that has so far sent seven tourists to space. He and Page jointly own a Boeing 767-200 and a Dornier Alpha Jet.

Brin was heavily involved in Google’s development of Google Glass – a head-mounted augmented reality display. He was also involved in the company’s driverless car project.

Brin now lives in Los Altos, California. He is dedicated to Google’s motto, “of making all the world’s information ‘universally accessible and useful'”.
